Chapter 780
Brad felt a sharp ache in his chest. "Nadine, you know damn well that's not what I meant! Jean is locked in my basement right now. I can take you to see her!"
It hit him then that no matter how much he tried to explain, Nadine wouldn't believe him. That realization left him feeling utterly powerless.
His voice rose because he felt misunderstood. Once he realized he was overreacting, he hurriedly toned it down and said, "Jean is seriously ill. She doesn't have the strength or the will to plan any of this!"
Jean had been waiting for a kidney transplant, but a suitable match had yet to be found. Until then, all she could do was rely on medication and dialysis to keep her condition under control.
Not long ago, she'd been confined to the basement, where the cold, damp air and lack of proper food and warmth took a toll on her health. The fever she developed almost cost her her life.noveldrama
Even at this moment, she lay weak in a specially prepared room in the Hamilton manor, isolated, without a phone or connection to the outside world.
Yet, for some reason, Nadine thought he was protecting Jean. It felt like he was talking to a wall.
Nadine watched as Brad went from being emotionally charged to calm and felt conflicted. In the past, he never felt the need to explain himself. Even when tears welled up in her eyes, he remained unmoved. Now that he was explaining himself, she found it impossible to believe him.
How could their marriage be worth salvaging when the trust between them was shattered? Everyone in Janctera City was waiting for news of the reconciliation. But none of them knew that there was notrust and love between them. It was impossible for them to reconcile.
Nadine once asked Avery, "How deeply would I have to like someone to be willing
to put up with their indifference, the mundane aspects of marriage, and all the
chaos that comes with it in order to spend a lifetime together?"
Avery had laughed in response. "You can't just like someone. You need love, and not just any love-deep and unwavering love. Anything less, and you'd surely part ways."
At the time, she foolishly believed she loved Brad enough to endure all the disappointments and grievances that their marriage brought. Eventually, she realized that merely going from hopeful anticipation to silence had drained all her love for him.
Ultimately, she learned that even the deepest love couldn't withstand indifference. As her once-burning heart turned cold, it became clear
that it didn't require arguior
petty conflicts to create a
between them. His indifference
alone was enough to bring
everything crashing down.
Nadine took a deep breath and nodded. "Alright, I understand." Her tone was cold
and distant, and she sounded exhausted.
In that fleeting moment, memories
of the emotional neglect she had suffered from Brad came rushing back, and any warmth she had felt disappeared instantly. So what if he saved her? There was nothing else she could do aside from repaying his kindness. It wasn't as if she would still have hope for marriage.
Her response was so dismissive that Brad was left perplexed. He thought she didn't believe him and hastily explained, "I'm telling the truth, Nadine! If you don't believe me, come with me to Phoenix Villa, and I'll show you!"
Nadine shook her head firmly. "That won't be necessary. I want to go home."
What do you think?
