Chapter 1453
In fact, he had called her many times in the past few days and had wanted to tell her about it. Not only could he not get in touch with her, but all his texts and calls also seemed to have sunk into the sea. All of a sudden, Raynee's call came charging for him. Wyatt was stunned for three seconds before he swiped on the answer button and hurriedly sorted out his thoughts. Before he could speak, Raynee's urgent voice came blasting through the speaker.
"Wyatt, is that you? My bag was stolen a few days ago, and I lost my mobile phone as well as all my cards. It was Christmas, and all the stores were closed for the holiday. I wanted to give you a call, but I couldn't remember your number. I was so anxious!"
His mouth remaining wide open, Wyatt was obviously distracted by her words.
What a coincidence! Did it mean she had yet received the messages from him suggesting to break up or call him back once she was free?
From her tone, could she not have been the one calling over back when Waverly had accidentally picked up the phone?
The confused thought flitted through Wyatt's mind before the answering voice came sounding in his ear.
"I got a temporary card a few days ago. I could barely remember your number, so I called you. It was most probably evening at your place, but you didn't pick up the phone. I thought I made a mistake! It's so troublesome out here for me to obtain a temporary card. I finally received it today, so I decided to call you once I installed it into my phone."
Her machine-gun- like voice came blasting against his eardrums. Wyatt couldn't help but frown. It was most probably the first time she had been so talkative in the past few years!
Vaguely, Wyatt could sense that it was too coincidental. Raynee's non-stop talking caused him to feel that something was amiss. Wanting to express his concern, he found it inappropriate after giving it a second thought as it was a stark shift away from the topic. After a brief pause, he went straight to the point. Surprisingly, he didn't feel as embarrassed or conflicted as he had expected and was surprisingly calm.
"Raynee, I have something to tell you..."
Was them being together for too long that led to their relationship turning dull and boring? As he thought so, Wyatt wondered if the person on the other end of the line felt the same?
Their bond through years of relationship was weak and fragile right then.
"Let's..." Break up!
As soon as Wyatt's voice rang out, the volume over the phone raised to a high pitch. "Wyatt, I know you care about me. I'm fine. It's just that I lost my stuff and quite some weight! It's fine. I don't have to work out to lose weight anymore!"
"That's good that you're fine, but as for what I want to say..." "It's not that!" He had yet to get the words out of his mouth.
"By the way, Wyatt, I really like the Christmas bag you gave me. It's a limited edition, isn't it? Thank you! I know you treat me well, but in fact, I prefer gray-blue over pastel. You should consider it the next time you buy me anything."
"Raynee..."
"Wyatt, time's up, I'll have to hang up! Let's talk next time! Someone's calling for me! There's a minor competition today, I have to get ready!"
"I love you. Bye!"
After a long phone call, Wyatt didn't get the chance to get a complete sentence out of his mouth. Several times over, he was either interrupted by Raynee or had his voice covered, not to mention how he didn't even get the chance to say "see you" before the other party hung up.
She was used to being anxious, but right then, Wyatt could sense something fishy. "She must have guessed it, hasn't she?"
His eyes falling on the phone, Wyatt sent her a message after a brief hesitation, "Raynee, let's break up!"
On the other hand, Raynee managed to end the call with a smile. All the while, she had been clenching her fists for fear of revealing her true feelings. Little did she expect to receive such a message at the end of the day.
The moment she lowered her gaze, her tears came splattering down her cheeks, her fingers contorted from gripping her mobile phone.
She had given him days to consider it well and for him to retain his dignity as well as enough space for them to think. She cherished their relationship, yet he wanted to break up with her?
She didn't care about him cheating on her and silently endured all the suffering. Had he been possessed? Which vixen lured his heart away?
Trembling with rage, Raynee had tears stream down her face as she clenched her fists.
After many years of feelings and persistence, she noticed the peak within her reach. Little did she expect such an incident to happen halfway.
Right then, her relationship and future were engaged in a battle in her heart. She was at a loss.
She had sacrificed a lot for her career and love for years with both of them soon coming to full bloom. Giving up on any one of them was equivalent to losing an arm for her. She was not willing to give up!
It was evident that she could obtain both at the same time since the two complemented each other. Why was she forced to make a choice?
Struggling, Raynee was in great agony. She desired to resolutely break up, but she was afraid of regretting her decision in the future. She wanted to return to the country and fight for love, but she had worked hard for years on her career and was required to give up at the last moment. Wouldn't she be ridiculed if she were to return? Wouldn't all her efforts and sacrifices be in vain? What was the difference between her and a joke?
She knew she couldn't get the best out of both, but she had spent a tremendous effort on them. Raynee was deeply conflicted.
While she was deep in thought, the screen of her mobile phone lit up. The call was from her mother. With a shudder, she softened like a deflated balloon, her voice soft to the extreme.
"Mom..."
"Raynee, how are you doing over there? Why haven't you called me recently? You won't even pick up the phone. You scared me to death! Is there anything wrong? Is there anything wrong with the competition that's going to be held next year? Do you know? Ever since we learned that you're qualified to participate in the Black Pool Dance Festival, your father is overjoyed! It doesn't matter if you win the prize or not. As long as you can participate in the competition, your status will rise, rewarding you with a new identity! Your dad's investing class now lacks someone like you."
Her mother's gentle voice lingered in her ears. All at once, the burden in Raynee's heart seemed to suddenly grow heavier.
That was right. Her family looked forward to the Black Pool Dance Festival, the most dignified event of the year for international dancers. It was not easy for her to get up to that point. Even if she wanted to give up right then, the first obstacle she had to get through was the organizers!
"Raynee, you must be exhausted from all the intense training, aren't you? Are you tired? Were you bullied? Your dad says to let him know if you're short of money! I had some money on standby as well. If you're tight on cash, I'll send some over to
you!"
She was about to reject her mother's kind offer when a mocking voice sounded from the other side of the phone.
"I say, Madam Clark, are you calling Raynee again? International calls are expensive, so save the money! Why call her? Isn't she aware of how old she is and how stiff her arms and legs should be? Why is she so desperately trying? I say, she should get married while she's young! Or else, she might end up losing the contest and failing to keep her husband-to-be by her side!" "How many years had she been dancing? She always ends up second in place. What's the use? Won't she waste money running around the world? She won't admit defeat to the fact that she's unlucky and insists on creating trouble, doesn't
she!"
Stephanie's voice?
Frowning, Raynee's face paled.
In the past few years, she had always achieved excellent results in every training match, no matter how grand or minor the event was. Logically speaking, she should have won the championship, but she would always not perform as expected. It seemed as though she had been cursed. Although she would always take the lead, she would end up losing her advantage at the last moment. It was why she didn't feel convinced over the years.
There weren't any problems with her skills and ability!
The main culprit to her defeat might most likely be her mindset...
Raynee's eyes darkened, her pale lips tightly pursed into a thin line. There followed a faint sizzle. Raynee guessed her mother might have moved away or turned to talk to Stephanie with her microphone covered.
Sure enough, her mother's gentle voice sounded after a short while. Right then, her voice lowered to a hushed whisper, and she seemed to have moved to a different place as Raynee could vaguely hear the sound of the wind.
"Raynee, don't take her words
seriously. Don't listen to her nonsense. What do children know?
I'm the best example, am I not? If
women aren't capable, men wouldn't
take a single look at you, so what's the point of being beautiful and gentle? At most, they would benoveldrama
fascinated by the start of a new net
relationship before they start getting sick of you. I don't have much hope for life as long as you're doing fine! Women need to equip themselves with skills. If you're skilled, men will be attracted to your uniqueness. Even if a man leaves you, there are still plenty of men out there. Women who dance are different and attractive. If you're accomplished, men won't have the right to look
down on you, don't they? At the very least, you can earn a living all by yourself and be so much more than me, who has to seek permission and endure others' mocking to just make a phone call..."
Her mother's faint sigh was breathed into the microphone. Raynee tensed.
"Raynee, the biggest achievement in my life is to give birth to you. I'm forever grateful that you make me proud! In the future, the Wagner Group has to rely on you, doesn't it? Don't learn from me. Women must practice self-love. You won't have any future if you're not the legal wife!"
Her mother's words of melancholy and relief struck Raynee's heart. Her heart
ached and was heavy as though a boulder rested on her chest. "Mom, I get it. I will work hard!"
After conversing a little while longer, Raynee hung up the phone in a daze. Could
she give up? For her mother's sake, she could never give up on the game!
With her eyes closed, Raynee's heart brewed a storm.
Yes, she was the first young lady of the Wagner Group, but very few knew that her biological mother was
a lover her father once failed. In
other words, her mother was a mistress that couldn't have her
identity revealed to the public. If it weren't for the sudden death of the daughter of the legal wife, she and
her mother would never be able to enter the Wagner Group and replace the real Raynee to become the first young lady of the Wagner Group. In fact, she was nothing more than an illegitimate daughter. What was even more unexpected was that two
years later, the legal wife, the woman whom she addressed as her
"mother" out in public, turned out to be pregnant and gave birth to a daughter, turning her position all the more awkward!
No one knew that behind her glamorizing outlook, she had to withstand greater pressure than anyone else out there!
What do you think?
