Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change?

Chapter 719

Chapter 719

"Tell me the truth, the doctor's just spouting nonsense, right?"

Caroline suddenly grasped Gilbert's shirt collar with a fierce grip, her eyes burning with a wild intensity. "He's nothing but a quack, isn't he?"

Gilbert's lips were pressed into a thin line, his response a heavy silence.

Earlier today, during Caroline's check-up, the doctor had discovered an alarming lack of sensation and reflex in her legs.

The doctor's words still echoed hauntingly in the air...

"Mr. Johnson, Ms. Bet's car accident caused severe damage to her lower back muscles and nerves. I'm afraid she won't be able to use her legs anymore."

"What does that mean?"

"Paralysis."

Those words plunged Caroline into despair and dragged Gilbert into a pit of guilt.

"Speak up! Say something!"

Caroline's voice cracked as her emotions teetered on the edge of hysteria, her eyes bloodshot and fiery.

"Oh, God... I'm never going to recover! I'm useless now! What's the point of even living?"

Letting go of him, she collapsed towards the floor!

"Caroline!"

"Let me go! I told you to let go!"

Gilbert caught her, but Caroline's despair gave her a surprising strength.

"Get the doctor!"

Gilbert shot a worried glance at the nurse. If this continued, he feared Caroline might seriously hurt herself. "Right away!"

The nurse hurried off, returning swiftly with the doctor.

"We need to administer a sedative, now!"

"Understood!"

"Let go! Let go of me..."

It took both Gilbert and a nurse to barely restrain Caroline's frantic struggles.

Once the sedative was administered, calm finally settled.

Caroline's eyelids drooped, her body losing all its fight.

Gilbert let out a long sigh, gently laying her back on the bed.

...

Outside in the corridor, Sherilyn sat on a bench, catching glimpses of the scene through the partially opened door.

It was more serious than she had expected.

The room quieted down, and the doctor left first, followed by Gilbert. He looked exhausted as he approached her.

He sat beside her, leaning back tiredly, his gaze fixed on the door. "It was that night."

His words were vague, but Sherilyn understood he meant the night they were both kidnapped.

"Yeah."

Though Sherilyn wasn't fond of Caroline, she couldn't help but feel a pang of pity. To end up in such a state was truly tragic. But her sympathy was limited.

"Can I go now?" she asked, making a move to stand.

"Sherilyn."

Gilbert frowned, gripping her hand. "She ended up like this because of me... Do you get that? I can't just abandon her." Sherilyn paused, then asked without answering, "Does my understanding matter to you?"

"Sherilyn..." Gilbert tightened his grip on her hand.

It hurt a bit. Sherilyn frowned slightly, a mock laugh escaping her. "If I don't understand, will you leave her?

Asking that seems pretty pointless."

She glanced at their intertwined hands. "Aren't you going to let go? After all this delay, I just want to go back to sleep."

Her voice was calm, her expression indifferent.

Just as she said, unbothered, uninvolved...

Gilbert felt a pang in his heart, wanting to say more but finding himself at a loss. He didn't let go, instead rising to his feet still holding her hand.

"I'll take you home."

"You think you can leave?" Sherilyn was surprised. "If she wakes up and

Gilbert gave her a look. "She won't wake up so soon after the sedative."
