Chapter 199 Aloofness
There was a long silence in the room. Lewis eventually put down his arm and made way for her to leave. He said, “Don’t simply enter this room without my permission next time.”
Josephine squeezed her fingers and nodded lightly. She then turned sideways and walked past him, leaving the office room. As she was leaving the company, she ran into Conrad. Conrad’s face lit up, and he said, “Ma… Miss Vance, you came. You came just in time. Please give me your bank card for a moment. We’re paying wages soon.”
Josephine was startled. She looked up at Conrad in surprise. She never thought that she would get paid.
Conrad read her thoughts and laughingly said, “Did you think you wouldn’t get paid? You have a working pass. If we don’t pay you a salary, we won’t be able to pass the tax assessment.”
Josephine then realized this was the reason. She felt her pockets but did not have the bank card
with her.
Conrad said, “If you did not bring it, the card number would suffice. You can give me the number, and I’ll help you register. The wages will be paid tomorrow.”
With that being said, Conrad paused for a moment before he continued, “You probably need money now as well, right?”
What he said was on point. Josephine left with a clean slate after her divorce from Lewis, so she naturally needed money. At the moment, she was staying at Dr. Halliday’s house. However, she did not want to stay there for free and wanted to pay rent. She would also need money after she finds Mrs. Jinkins. She could no longer take her job as a pastime activity like she did before. She needed to start
working for survival. With this in mind, Josephine pulled out her phone. She found her bank card number and sent it to Conrad.
“Okay, I’ll help you register later,” Conrad said.
Josephine grabbed him when he wanted to leave, and she typed, “Can I continue to come to
work?”
“Of course. Did Chairman Alvarez tell you not to?”
Josephine shook her head.
“Then you should continue. How do you plan to earn money if you don’t come to work?” Conrad said seriously.
Everything that Conrad said was to encourage Josephine to come to work. The staff had a hard time at work because of their divorce recently. Chairman Alvarez was a prideful man who refused to bow his head, so he took out his anger on the staff. Although they couldn’t get remarried in such a short time, Lewis could still see Josephine if she came to work, and his
mood ought to improve if that was the case.
Josephine stayed silent for a moment before she nodded in agreement. There was nothing more important than earning money now.
“Great! Oh, I mean, it’s good to earn money. I’ll go work now.” After speaking, Conrad walked past her furtively.
Josephine did not take it to heart. When she came to her old office, her workstation had been taken by another young and pretty girl. She looked around seventeen or eighteen years old and had some baby
fat on her face, looking innocent and cute. Josephine suddenly recalled Sierra mentioning that Lewis had an affair with another woman. She shook her head and got rid of those thoughts. She walked into the office and sat down at a vacant seat.
In the afternoon, Josephine suddenly remembered her purpose for coming here. She stood up quickly and went to find Lewis. She must settle this while she was clear-headed. She was worried she would not remember if she had an episode again.
She arrived at Lewis’ office. She raised her hand and was about to knock, but the door flung open. Josephine lifted her head and saw Lewis. The man already had his black coat on. It appeared that he was ready to get off work.
“What do you want?” Lewis asked coldly, and there was a hint of disgust in his eyes.
Josephine gestured, “I want to ask about Mrs. Jinkins.”
Lewis’ expression hardened. His voice became even colder as he said, “Did you forget your current status?”
Josephine shook her head. She gestured, “I remember, but Mrs. Jinkins is missing. Do you know where she went?”
“What does that have to do with me? Josephine, you chose this path. Since you showed great backbone, why don’t you look for her yourself?” Lewis replied.
Josephine was taken aback. As she was in a daze, Lewis walked past her heartlessly without looking back. Josephine stood there in a stupor. After she regained her senses, Lewis was already near the elevator. She pursued him immediately without thinking and went into the elevator with him. The man frowned and said, “Get out!”
Josephine was panting, and her face was flushed. She gestured, “Patrick and his family moved away, and I could not find her. I’m sure you know, so please tell me.”
Lewis abruptly stepped forward, and a cold aura enveloped his body. Josephine subconsciously stepped back. Her back was pressed closely against the elevator, but she stirred up the courage to stare directly at him.
He reached out and grabbed her chin. There was no warmth in his voice as he said, “Even If I know, am I obligated to tell you?”
Josephine was stunned. She grimaced, suddenly experiencing a profound sense of
powerlessness. He knew, but he did not plan to tell her. Josephine remained silent for some time before she gestured, “What should I do so that you will tell me?”
Lewis released his grip on her chin roughly and stood at the elevator entrance. He slightly turned his head to look at her as he said, “Is Mary Jinkins that important to you?”
Josephine nodded without hesitation. Mrs. Jinkins was half her home aside from Styx Mansion. Everyone she cared about had left, and now even Mrs. Jinkins was nowhere to be found. She did not know the reason for her existence anymore. She would prefer to die than be left alone in a world of endless loneliness and infinite darkness. She was timid and could not
handle this.
The final hint of warmth in the man’s eyes vanished when she nodded, leaving only aloofness. The elevator door opened, and Lewis walked out. Josephine chased after him reflexively. Lewis stopped and turned to glance at her. He said, “I can tell you her whereabouts. We have a client tonight. If you can make him happy and secure the contract for this project, I’ll tell you.’
Josephine’s pupils contracted slightly. She looked at the man’s unfamiliar gaze, and her heart missed a beat. She gestured, “Make him happy… What should I do to make him happy?”
He smirked, “That is up to you. I only look at the results. Since Mary Jinkins is more important than your life, I’m sure you’ll find a way to persuade him.”
Josephine could discern the underlying message in his words, and her heart quickly sank into despair. He only remembered her cutting her wrist and asking for a divorce. Yet, he could never comprehend the reason behind her actions, instead attributing all blame to her. When in actuality, he was the one who had forced her to a dead end, but everything ended up as her fault, and she was viewed as being unreasonable.
Josephine grimaced, showing a bitter smile. People would never remember the ones they hurt. They would only remember the ones who hurt them. Josephine did not want to explain anymore. She forced a smile and nodded in agreement. Content © provided by NôvelDrama.Org.
The man snickered. There was endless contempt and mockery in his voice. He opened the car door, sat in the driver’s seat, and drove off.
Josephine watched as his car drove off into a distance, and the swirling dust obscured her vision. She only came back to her senses after the car vanished from her sight. She touched her face, and it was cold.
Within five minutes, she received a text from Conrad stating the address and the client’s information. Conrad hesitated slightly when he sent this text because he knew Lewis did not intend to partner with him. He could not understand why he sent Josephine to discuss this with him. Moreover, Mr. Walter was an infamous pervert.
