Chapter 552 Letting Go of Feelings

Some people were easy to understand when they spoke, while others just never seemed to click.

Take Michael, for example. Emily had texted him earlier, asking him not to pick her up and suggesting it would be easier for her to take a cab home later.

After all, Michael had been driving all over Emerald City to get to the hospital to pick her up these past few days. Emily felt bad about it and couldn't just send Michael away afterward.

So she let him stay at her place in Emerald Lake Manor.

But this couldn't go on forever. Emily knew she had to find the right moment to talk to Michael.

She needed to explain her concerns and thoughts clearly.

After all, she didn't want Michael to think she was too casual about things, and she certainly didn't want him to ignore the fact that they were already divorced.

But, Michael showed up again.

He came alone, driving a large SUV to make sure Emily could rest more comfortably. Emily appreciated how considerate he had become.

But she wasn't the same emotionally vulnerable Emily she used to be; it wasn't that easy to move her anymore.

"Is it cold in the car? Do you want me to turn up the heat?" Michael asked with concern, his voice full of warmth.

Emily shook her head, speaking stiffly. "No, it's already comfortable."

But Michael still turned the heat up to the highest setting, and the temperature inside the car gradually rose.

He turned to Emily, smiling. "I hope you feel more comfortable."

Emily fell silent for a long time.

Michael seemed to enjoy this, and Emily didn't outright reject him, which meant he could try to make up for everything he hadn't done right before.

More importantly, he still held onto a glimmer of hope, maybe, over time, the rift between them could heal.

Emily closed her eyes, but after thinking it over, she still felt uncomfortable. She decided to speak up, "I don't like this."

The car had just stopped at the first traffic light.

Hearing Emily's words, Michael was taken aback at first, then fell silent for a moment. The light in his eyes seemed to dim, but he maintained his composure, his voice tinged with a hint of helplessness. "Sorry."

Emily took a deep breath and continued softly.

"I hope you understand that even though you're good to me, we're over."

"I know you've put in a lot of effort these days, but that doesn't mean we can go back to the past."

"I've said these things many times, and I really don't want you to hold onto these pointless fantasies."

Though her face was expressionless, her words were firm and impactful.

Each sentence felt like it was carved into Michael's heart.

He took a deep breath, watching the traffic light change, and started the car, responding lightly. "Got it."

Emily's heart tightened. She knew these words were cruel to Michael, but she understood it was a reality they had to face. Being soft-hearted wouldn't solve their problems.

Emily bit her lower lip, unwilling to say more, and turned to look out the window, watching the scenery pass by quickly.

Suddenly, Michael spoke again, "Dean is out of prison."

Emily turned her head in shock.

A few months ago, Dean and Sophia's actions, along with Scarlett's manipulation of Evelyn, had left a lasting scar on Emily's heart.

Michael's words stirred up emotions in Emily. She tried to stay calm, but her expression gave her away.

Michael noticed her unease. He spoke gently, "Don't worry, I'll handle it. I've been picking you up a lot because I'm worried Dean might try something again."

When they found Mark last time, he didn't reveal Dean's plans. Even though Patrick suggested keeping an eye on Dean and Mark, Michael was still anxious. He worried during meetings, while eating, and even dreamed about Emily and the child being in danger.

That was why he had been staying at Emerald Lake Manor recently.

Emily sighed softly, feeling a mix of guilt and gratitude.

She had misunderstood Michael's intentions, thinking he wanted to reconcile.

Realizing this, Emily felt embarrassed and self-centered.

Though she couldn't accept Michael's feelings, she knew his protection was largely because of their child.

"I'm sorry, I..."

Before Emily could finish, Michael interrupted her.noveldrama

"No need to apologize, you didn't do anything wrong. I was just being overly cautious."

Emily felt the warmth in Michael's tone, and a wave of guilt washed over her.

She knew she could reject Michael's affection, but she couldn't deny the child's need for his father's love.

Michael drove Emily back to Emerald Lake Manor.

This time, he planned to leave; after all, Emily's words had sunk in.

The car slowly stopped outside the gates of Emerald Lake Manor. Michael turned off

the engine and looked at Emily.

"I'll be really busy soon and won't be able to visit you and the child as often. But don't worry, I'll make sure you're safe."

Emily understood his reasoning. She sighed and turned to face Michael.

"I'm sorry for what I said earlier."

"Michael, there's no chance for us, but I can't take away your right to see the child."

"He's still young and needs your protection. You can come whenever you want, and if

you want to stay, I'll keep the guest room ready for you."

"We're the child's parents, and we should prioritize his needs."

"Let people say what they want; why bother with them?"

Michael paused, feeling both grateful and helpless.

Grateful that Emily was willing to accept him again, ignoring external gossip.

However, he felt helpless because he knew he had to gradually let go of his feelings for Emily. Continuing to pursue her would be pointless.

Michael understood the complexity of their relationship, but his sense of responsibility

as a father made him willing to set aside his personal feelings.

The two reconciled once more and got out of the car, heading into Emerald Lake

Manor.

Harry was still awake, his cries echoing through the warmly lit manor.

Meanwhile, outside, someone whispered, "Michael's staying over again tonight? We've been waiting for nothing. What a bummer!"
