Chapter 687
Chapter 687
Meanwhile, at the Gibson residence, Xander sat by the dining table.
He was a young and handsome man with almost bewitching beauty.
He watched in silence as Avery quietly fed Cal his meal.
Avery was dressed in a black suit with her hair tied in a ponytail. Her delicate face was clean and delicate.
He wasn't sure if it was due to the maternal glow she exuded, but he found her becoming increasingly charming, making him unable to resist the urge to take a second look.
Xander was the first to speak, breaking the silence in the room. “Ms. Rumpley, we invited you here today for a meal, partly to bid you farewell and partly to give you some advice for your trip to Remdik. I apologize for what happened to Cayden before. I didn't expect such an unexpected incident to occur. I've found out that Cayden's attack was connected to the Remdikian mafia, but the specifics of their entanglement are still shrouded in mystery. Going to Remdik this time will be quite dangerous, so I'll assign you a few more skilled bodyguards.”
As Avery fed Cal milk, she spoke in a low voice. “Thank you, Mr. Gibson. You don't need to apologize because of what happened to Cayden. On the contrary, I should be the one apologizing to you. When Cayden was attacked, the incident cost you two good men. Also, I always remember the help you've given to my husband and my company. I will definitely repay you when the opportunity arises.”
“Mommy, I don't want to drink milk,” Cal suddenly said in a babyish voice, his little mouth puckering up adorably.
“Be good. Drink more milk so you can grow taller. Cal, you can drink a little less, okay?” Avery patiently coaxed him.
“No, I don't want to. I want fried chicken.” Cal stubbornly pouted, his face full of reluctance.
Cal, with his short arms and legs, still wasn't very good at using a fork. It was always Avery who fed him.
Seeing his mother always serving him the food he disliked, Cal shook his head like a rattle drum.
Xander cast a cool glance at Cal, then said to Avery, “Don't just focus on feeding the child. You should eat something first. You have a flight to catch this afternoon.”
“I'm not hungry right now.” Avery had barely finished uttering those words when her stomach rumbled as if contradicting her.
Her cheeks flushed with a touch of shyness. “Let me feed Cal first, and then I'll eat.”
Avery was somewhat worried. Cal was incredibly picky with food, and he had no idea who he had inherited that trait from. His older siblings certainly didn't have that bad habit.
“Let me feed him.” Xander stood up from his seat, intending to take Cal from Avery's arms.
But Cal clung tightly to his mother's arm, glaring unhappily at Xander with his bright, clear eyes. “I don't want this mister to hold me. I want Mommy to feed me. Not just anyone can feed Cal.”
Although Cal was just over two years old and usually not very talkative, when he did speak, he was incredibly articulate. He didn't seem like a two-year-old, especially with the look in his eyes. It was apparent at first glance that he was an intelligent kid.
“Cal, you must not be rude to Mr. Gibson like this.” Avery tugged at his son's cheek, schooling him with a stern face.
Xander scoffed. “Do you think everyone has the privilege of being fed by me? If it weren't for the fact that your father is Cayden, I wouldn't bother with you at all.” This little rascal is indeed Cayden's son. Not only does he look similar, but even this bad temper is exactly like his.
Xander's single remark left Cal speechless.
The man Cal admired most was his father, Cayden. Although he had never met him, his mother would often recount his father's heroic deeds to him.
Therefore, in Cal's eyes, Cayden was definitely a superhero.
“All right then.” Cal reluctantly allowed himself to be held in Xander's arms, letting the latter feed him.
Ironically, the food Xander chose was just like his mother's, always picking things he didn't particularly enjoy eating.
Even though he didn't want to eat, he was somewhat intimidated by Xander's terrifying aura. Thus, he had no choice but to finish his meal obediently.
Avery looked at his son in Xander's arms. Cal's pitiful demeanor of not daring to express his grievances amused her, but more was a pang of sadness.
She usually spoiled her children too much. She was a loving mother but not a strict father, which led to Cal becoming somewhat pampered.
If Cayden were still there, Cal would surely behave differently.
Xander placed a small piece of tender fish, from which he had removed the bones, into Cal's mouth. After a moment of hesitation, he finally spoke, “Ms. Rumpley, there's actually another reason why I invited you here today.” Owned by NôvelDrama.Org.
“What?” Avery asked, puzzled.
“I want to ask about Nina. From what I understand, her social circle is quite limited. Apart from work, she seems to just stay at home and doesn't appear to have any particular hobbies. I'm curious, why does she always turn down my invitations? You're Nina's best friend, so you should know her likes and dislikes better than anyone. Could you tell me more about her?”
For two years, Xander had been pursuing Nina, but she seemed to have a strong guard up, particularly fearful of men.
Every time he moved a bit closer to her, she would scream in terror. She would even curse at Xander or resort to kicking and punching. That left him utterly baffled.
He had also investigated everything about Nina, but some things had been deliberately erased by someone, leaving a blank in her profile.
At the mention of Nina, Avery's heart immediately sank, and her face turned icy cold. “Mr. Gibson, don't you know what happened to Nina? There are some things you'd better ask your younger brother!”
She uttered the last sentence through gritted teeth.
Then, she stood up abruptly, took her son back from Xander, and said coldly, “Thank you for your invitation today, Mr. Gibson. I have a flight to catch, so I must take my leave now!”
After she finished speaking, she left, cradling Cal in her arms, who was still holding a piece of fried chicken and happily munching away, leaving Xander with a baffled expression on his face.
It seemed that he needed to reinvestigate the matters concerning Nina.
Xavier, with the twins in tow, bade farewell to Avery at the airport.
Rory's pretty face was tear-streaked from crying while she continuously rubbed her eyes with her little hands.
The little girl buried her head deeply into Avery's waist, her face full of reluctance. “Mom, when will you come back? Will you leave us behind just like Dad did?”
She was terrified, afraid that her mother would leave and never return, just like her father did.
Although Zachary didn't cry, his condition wasn't much better. The handsome little guy had red- rimmed eyes, holding back tears, struggling to keep them from falling.
Avery gently stroked her daughter's little head, comforting the latter tenderly, “Don't worry. I'm going to Mocset to find your dad, and we will come back together. Can you trust me?”
Zachary looked steadily at his mother. His lips pursed, and his eyes were full of hope. “Mom, you and Cal must bring Dad back. Rory and I will wait for you to come home.”
“Okay! I'll definitely bring your dad home.”
Avery held back the tears in her eyes, nodding heavily. Then, she instructed Xavier, “Mr. Dartsley, could you please take extra care of them for a while? If anything happens, give me a call. I'm counting on you.”
Xavier assured her, “Don't worry, Ms. Rumpley. I will take good care of them.”
Avery kissed each of the twins, fearing that looking back would only make it harder to leave. Without turning her head, she boarded the plane.
No matter what, she was determined to bring the children's father back this time. She firmly believed in herself!
