Standing nearby, Paul hung his head low, avoiding eye contact. In an instant, Caroline understood. Someone had tipped him off.

"I warned you," David said in a deep, raspy voice, "not to touch her." His piercing gaze locked onto Caroline. "Did you take my words as a joke?"

At the sound of David's arrival, Elizabeth immediately switched from her overbearing attitude to one of feigned fragility.

"Mr. David..." Elizabeth collapsed to the ground, propping herself up with her hands. "I came to see my sister, hoping to clear the air between us. But before I could even speak, she started cursing at me-and then she hit me."

Tears streamed down her face as she crawled to David's side, throwing herself into his arms.

"It's my fault," she sobbed. "Caroline has every right to be upset. Please don't blame her, Mr. David."

Her textbook-perfect performance as a victim left Caroline utterly speechless.

David glanced down at Elizabeth in his arms. His lips tightened as if he wanted to push her away but ultimately restrained himself.

David gave a faint "hmm" in response.

Caroline, watching this scene unfold was dumbfounded.

"Yes, Mr. David," one replied, stepping forward.

Paul hesitated, speaking up timidly, "Sir, if Madam Harper and Mr. Richard find out about this, they might..."

"Hmm?" David's voice sharpened. Too much talking."

Paul sighed and stepped back, silenced.

What a joke, Caroline thought bitterly, biting her lip. Her own husband was cradling her stepsister while ordering her hand to be destroyed.

She would never let that happen.

Summoning a sudden burst of strength from who-knows-where, Caroline wrenched herself free from the bodyguards!
