Chapter 36
I looked at Gina in surprise.
"Me?!" I shrieked
Jackson laughed loudly. Even my parents joined in.
"Gina, darling,” he said, "pick a better opponent. Elise here couldn't handle a feather, let alone a real fight."
"You're right" my mom said "Don't waste your time on her, my dear"
My parents exchanged glances and chuckled. They had always considered me too wild, too untamed. The thought that I might actually be able to hold my own in a fight was something they clearly couldn't entertain.
"Do not judge a book by its cover," Ferris said, commanding everyone's attention. Everywhere became silent as he spoke.
"Elise is strong" Ferris said "How can you not see that?"
"Surely, you must be mistaken, your grace" my father said "Elise wouldn't last a minute in a fight with anyone. She's our daughter. We're sure of this".
"You might be surprised"
Ferris' encouragement warmed my heart. He was the only person who stood up for me.
I tried to refuse Gina's challenge. I didn't want things to end up badly for both of us. This couldn't go well, no matter what the outcome was.
"Gina, this isn't necessary. We don't need to resort to violence," I said, hoping to avoid the confrontation. "Let's just "
Gina's eyes narrowed "Oh, so now you're trying to back out? What's the matter, Elise? Afraid you might actually have to defend yourself?"
She turned to Jackson "I guess Elise thinks she's too good to fight me. Or maybe she just doesn't have the guts."
Jackson turned to face me with an annoyed expression
"What's this nonsense?" he barked at me "How dare you refuse your Luna?"
"But -" I started.
"Elise, you've been called out. Obey your Luna and do as you're told."
I took a deep breath, knowing I had little choice now. My options were limited, and
I couldn't afford to refuse Gina.
I nodded slowly" Alright. I'll fight"
Gina smiled "Perfect. Let's go"
Gine and I stepped down and walked down the field. The crowd parted for us, creating a ring in the center of it all. Gina and I stepped down to the middle. The place went silent.
I looked at Gina. She had a smile plastered on her face, like she was sure she was going to win.
The thing is Nobody knows that I was rescued by an old woman when I was taken by Scar. This woman and her son took me in, cared for me and taught me so many things.
The woman taught me the art of healing and potion making amongst other things. Her son, who was a warrior in his former pack, taught me martial arts. He taught me how to fight in all kinds of forms and with weapons as well. When I came back, I never told anyone or practiced fighting because already, my parents saw me as too wild and untamed. I didn't want to give them or anyone else further reasons to think I wasn't fit to be queen so I kept my skills to myself.
It's the reason I didn't want to fight Gina. I knew she wouldn't win.
The referee came in between us and asked "Fists or swords?"noveldrama
"Fists" Gina said.
As soon as the referee left, Gina charged forward at me with a right hook aimed at my head. I shifted my weight to my back foot, smoothly dodging her punch. I felt the rush of air as Gina's fists moved past me. Everyone gasped. Even Gina looked surprised.
Gina blinked repeatedly. She definitely didn't expect that. Despite everything she did to me, I didn't want to hurt her.
Gina composed herself and lunged at me again. She tried to punch me but I blocked the punch with my forearm, redirecting the force to the side. Gina stumbled and fell as a result.
"I don't want to fight you" I said.
Gina let out a frustrated sigh. She got up again and punched me severally. I dodged all of her punches swiftly. I was focusing more on defending myself. I didn't want to hurt her.
I sidestepped Gina's attacks without even breaking a sweat. I dodged and countered all her punches with my arms held up. Gina aimed a kick at my midsection, but I anticipated it. I landed on my back foot and swept my arm down to deflect the kick.
Gina's nose flared in anger "Fight back, coward! You're such a cheap slut"
I didn't let the words get to me. Everyone was on their feet now, intrigued by the
fight. They were all watching, waiting to see what would happen.
Gina's taunts grew harsher. She whispered so that nobody else would hear.
"You're nothing, Elise! Always hiding, always weak!"
That was when I started to get angry. I could feel the rage pumping in my veins. I was tired of Gina treating me like shit. It was time to show her who's really weak.
Gina threw a kiek aiming at my head. I saw an opening. I side stepped the kick by dodging immediately and going to the other side. I delivered a side blow to Gina's ribs. The impact made Gina gasp. It was the first time I had hit her since the fight started. Before Gina could recover,
delivered a round house kick to her stomach. Gina staggered backward, hurt and off-balance.
I delivered another kick to her face, making Gina scream. I finally ended the fight
with a sweeping leg kick. Gina's legs out from under her, sending her crashing to
the ground. Gina lay there, gasping for breath and staring up at me with wide
eyes.
Gina let out a loud scream, turned to the side and held her face. She began writhing in pain. Jackson and my parents rushed to her side immediately. They crouched down and checked on her. Gina kept screaming and rolling on the floor in pain. I didn't even hit her that hard. She was obviously pretending.
"How could you?" my father screamed at me.
I looked at them in disbelief "She challenged me! She started it"
"You've never liked her" my mom cried "You've always wanted to hurt your sister. How could you be so mean?"
"You're such an animal!" my father barked.
His words hurt me deeper than any knife ever could. How could they treat me like this? I had done nothing to deserve their hatred.
I couldn't believe it. Even when Gina was at fault, I would still be blamed. There
was nothing I could do to change that. It was sad but it was the truth. "Well, If the winner needs to be punished, then I think I really don't fit in here." Without another word, I ran away from the fields with anger in my eyes.
What do you think?
