What really got under Mayra’s skin was how Anderson passed her off to another man after she hurt Isabel. At the dinner table, Anderson played the role of a caring

brother, giving her food and chatting away.

Mayra took a few bites before feeling full. She laid down her cutlery and dabbed her mouth with a napkin. “Andy, I’m done. I’ll head back to school now,” she announced, rising from her seat.

Anderson pulled out a pack of cigarettes. “Let Hailey drop you off.”

Mayra shook her head. “No need. The school is nearby. I can walk there in just a few minutes.”

“Alright, I’ll pick you up after your classes end,”

Mayra nodded. “Okay,”

After leaving the private room, Mayra intentionally lingered outside and listened in. Sure enough, the atmosphere changed as soon as she left. The scraping of the wooden chair against the floor sounded harsh,

Hailey ended up on Anderson’s lap. He exhaled a puff of smoke, causing Hailey to cough, Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.

“Can’t handle the spice?” he teased. Hailey remained silent with her eyes lowered, Anderson’s gaze shifted from her cold, stunning features to the mole under her eye.

“I’m stuffed, Mr. Barlow,” Hailey said.

Anderson held her waist so that she couldn’t move. He replied, “I’m not. Feed me.” Hailey was silent.

“Didn’t catch that? Since you’ve agreed, then act like a proper mistress. Even… Mayra listens better!” The silver ring on Anderson’s finger brushed across Hailey’s smooth face. It was cold to the touch, a chilling reminder that he was already engaged.

Walking into the sunlight, Mayra felt a chill Anderson was a gentleman to her face, but behind her back, he was just another debaucher

What a hypocrite.

On her way back, Mayra spotted a shop owner throwing cardboard boxes next to a trash bin. She asked, “Excuse me, sir. May take those cardboard boxes if van des

need them?”

The shop owner eyed her up and down, noting her Belchester High School uniform. He nodded and asked, “Why do you need them? You seem to come from a well–off family”

Mayra smiled. “Money is still money, Please, can I have them?”

“Alright, take them.”

“Thank you.”

Mayra picked up the boxes and noticed some plastic bottles in the trash bin. She grabbed them and put them in the boxes. As she bent down, the black card in her pocket fell out. She picked it up nonchalantly and put it back in her pocket.

Mayra then saw a car pass by, and a half–full bottle was thrown out. Shaking her head, she walked over. “Such a waste,” Mayra muttered.

Mayra had struggled before, especially when Anderson wasn’t around, Starving was a common occurrence,

An old lady once told her that she could make money from collecting recyclables. In the past, she had assumed she could rely on Anderson forever and acted recklessly. However, she later learned that if Anderson wanted her gone, a word would do it.

Mayra had felt a sense of crisis the last time she was left on her own. Now, she wanted to earn enough money to be independent so that she wouldn’t have to rely on Anderson even if he abandoned her.

She would never touch the money he gave her. It wasn’t truly hers.

Mayra carried the boxes and plastic bottles back, feeling contented with her haul.

In a passing cab, Gordon, who had just returned from a competition in Candor City, saw her. His friend nudged him. “Gordon, isn’t that your Mayra? Why is she wearing the uniform of Belchester High School?”
