Chapter 18
Chapter 18
That entire day, she felt as if she was sleepwalking, she put on a white shirt as he requested, afraid
that he would become impatient and change his mind, she didn’t even have time to put on makeup,
she just followed him to get the marriage certificate
The process of getting the certificate was simple, and their wedding photos were taken casually. Liam
didn’t even smile, and only she smiled like a fool.
Such a reckless beginning shouldn’t end in haste.
She applied some lipstick in the mirror, the bright color made her radiant.
She would be dignified and generous at the divorce, giving this failed love affair a perfect ending.
At half past two in the afternoon, while Celeste was on her way to City Hall, she suddenly received a
call from Mercy Hospital her mother’s heart had suddenly stopped beating!
Celeste’s heart skipped a beat, and she immediately headed for Mercy Hospital.
When she arrived, her mother was being treated in the resuscitation room. The doctor handed her a
critical condition notice, which she signed with trembling hands.
Over the years, she had signed countless critical condition notices.
Every time she signed, she felt like a drowning person, gasping for breath, not knowing which time
would be the last.
After signing, she was somewhat dazed, it took her a long time to remember to call Shawn..
“Dad, mom is not doing well, can you come to the hospital?” Her voice was calm, but trembled.
It seemed quite noisy on Shawn’s end, “I have an important meeting right now, can’t make it.”
Celeste clenched her hand, “The doctor said her condition is serious, there might be no hope left, this
might be the last time.”
“The doctor has been saying that since six years ago, it’s you who can’t let go! Looking at her now, do
you think she’s still alive?” Shawn said.
Celeste’s eyes reddened, “What do you mean by that?”
Shawn’s reply was perfunctory, “I’ll call you back when I’m done.” Without waiting for Celeste to
respond, he hung up.
She squatted on the floor, feeling an overwhelming sense of disappointment, tears gushed out in an
instant.
Her phone rang at this moment, and it was Liam.
She widened her eyes, and answered the phone, “Liam, my mom…”
“Celeste, is it fun to play with me? We agreed to get divorced today. Where are you?” Liam asked.
Celeste’s words got stuck in her throat, and she couldn’t say a single word.
Yeah, right, how could she count Liam as her support?
“Celeste?” Liam raised his voice, the eerie silence on the other end made him inexplicably nervous.
After a few seconds, Celeste’s voice finally came through, “I have something going on today, can we
reschedule?”
Liam scoffed, “Reschedule? Celeste, do you think I’m as free as you? You’re the one who keeps talking
about divorce and disappears when it matters most. What do you want to do?”
Celeste’s face turned pale, and she said hoarsely, “I really have something going on today, and I can’t
make it. Let me know when you’re available, and I’ll be there on time.”
“I don’t have time for your games!” Liam coldly left these words and hung up the phone.
Celeste held her phone for a long time before she laughed at herself.
Every time she needed Liam the most, he was never there. Her hopes had been dashed so many
times, that she no longer expected anything.
She sat alone in the silent waiting room for a long hour until the nurse came to inform her that it was
time to move her mom
to the ward. Only then did she wake up.
Caitlyn had barely made it, but the doctor told Celeste that her mother’s various bodily functions had
begun to show significant decline. This was not a good sign, and she should be prepared.
Celeste thanked the doctor, sent him away, and asked the carer Elaine to help her get a basin of hot
water.
When she went to get a towel, Elaine quickly said, “Ms. Campbell, let me do it.”
“It’s okay, I’ll do it myself. You go have some rest, and I’ll call you if I need you.” Celeste said.
Seeing that she insisted, Elaine left.
Celeste wrung out the water from the towel and sat by the bed to wipe Caitlyn’s body.
It had been six years since the accident, and Caitlyn had been lying in bed in this state for six years.
Her muscles had almost completely atrophied, her body lay in bed like a withered husk, and she could
only survive on nutrient solution every day. Despite this, her body continued to weaken day by day.
Perhaps one day, she would never see her mom again.
Human beings were strange creatures. When Celeste was a child, Caitlyn wasn’t very good to her. She
was a strict mother who disciplined herself and treated her children like a carefully crafted work of art.
Motherly love was just a byproduct of her fulfilling her expectations.
But a child’s dependence on their mother seemed to be innate. Even the strictest motherly love was
something she couldn’t let go of. Even if Caitlyn lay like this for the rest of her life, Celeste wouldn’t be
afraid to live by herself.
Luckily, she was still alive.
She carefully wiped her mother’s upper body and had to ask Elaine for help when it was time to turn
her over. By the time she was done with all this, she was drenched in sweat. Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
Hot water was only available in Caitlyn’s bathroom after 8 PM.
Elaine told her that there was a public bathroom downstairs for caregivers to use and kindly lent her a
set of clothes.
Celeste thanked her and went to the public bathroom Elaine mentioned with her toiletries.
It happened to be dinner time at the hospital, so there were hardly any people in the bathroom.
After the shower, Celeste felt much fresher, and her head didn’t hurt as much as before.
The sky outside had turned a bit gloomy by now. The heat of the day had subsided, and the night
breeze was warm. Celeste didn’t go back right away but went to the second–floor terrace to catch a
breeze.
