Chpater 394
There was no room for uncertainty in my mind; all I needed to know was how things worked and what to do if things didn't go according to plan. "We're patrolling the first few hours on foot tonight". A voice from Rocco arose.
While venturing into the wilderness, he remained mute.
"Foot?". Alanna furrowed her brow. "That makes no sense and-...". She hesitated. "Right so we'll shift around 4?".
This was clearly my fault, I knew it. I knew all along that we were on patrol as wolves. For my benefit alone, I fail to see why they would be on foot patrols.
"We're only making sure the perimeter is safe and there are no signs of intruders".
"Does that happen often?". I questioned Rocco.
"More than you think but it only ever turns out to be wild animals".
"It's not always wild animals Rocco". Glaring at her, Alanna made her point. "I mean you breached us".
Oh no.
"Yeah, and now my family is safe". You could see the stare he returned.
"I'm just saying it's not always wild animals".
"Alanna is right". It was a heavy sigh from him. Nobody ever gets too much of it, although people do try it. Typically, they will go on once they discover that the area is privately owned. "Usually?". I scowled.
"Are you going to question everything?". Inquiring, he spoke out.
My apologies, but I want to get all the information I can. I apologize if I'm being bothersome.
As he ran his fingers over his hair, a sigh escaped his lips. "No, I'm sorry it's just been a long couple of nights".
"Are you always night patrol?".
There was a nod from him.
"Why don't you ask to change?".
Good day. Alanna stepped in. "If he changes then that means we'll have to do it more often or more so me".
“And?”. I drew a look. She should have practiced controlling her speech. That Rocco had to do it so often was unfair.
"I prefer it". His voice carried. "But yeah, I could use a change".
"You've been on it since you joined us, haven't you?".
"Leah, I would prefer it if you wouldn't give me any favors. I am unconcerned about my responsibilities. I obey the orders of the Alpha. "See he prefers it". Alanna chimed in.
Her lack of consideration before speaking was ridiculous.
"Rocco Alanna and I aren't the only ones. If Jake felt the need, I'm sure he could send more personnel out here.
"No favours Leah". Rocco spoke once more.
My jaw dropped. "No favours I promise".
"I'm shifting". Alanna chimed in. "Rocco and you may do foot patrols in this area, Leah. I'll take care of the corners. My legs need a break.
In the flash of an eye, she moved, and we were left behind.
"I'm going to say that was my fault". A shiver went up my spine.
His mouth dropped open in laughter. "She just doesn't want to be landed with the shit end of the stick".
"And you think you have?". I scowled.
Since we were admitted into the pack, I have been on nights, but I go where instructed. However, the fact remains. Shrugging, he went on with his day. "You should talk to Jake".
"Yeah right". A snort escaped his lips.
"What's that supposed to mean?".
"Everything is unacceptable. This is a good place for me. I would rather not put my many blessings at risk.
"Okay". My response was a nod. "How's Reign getting on?".
Actually, she's quite good. Got a work at the mall and is now very interested in going back to school.
"Amazing". And I smiled. "I'm glad she's doing good".
"How are you doing?".
"I'm okay". A shrug was all I could muster. "Living the dream like always".
"Then why are you out here?" was the question. As far as I'm concerned, Lunas have never engaged in such behavior.
"What patrolling?".
"Yeah". He smiled. "I'm surprised Jake agreed to it".
"Same". It made me chuckle. “But nothing ever happens so he's got nothing to worry about, right?".
"Right". Smiling, he said. “Come on we better get a move on".
We had been on the go for around thirty minutes. Rocco was directing me along the path they use and pointing me where to look for obstacles. This was the deepest part of the forest I had ever been in.
In wolf shape, how does one achieve this? How, as a wolf, do you mend things if they've been breached?
"That depends on the size of the breach. This location is monitored continuously throughout the day. Someone is constantly out here.
"I guess you patrol in wolf form because it's safer?".
Shrugging, he went on with his day. "Well, it's faster and it's not as cold".
"We're on foot because of me, right?".
This is your first patrol. Walking before shifting is the way to go. Signifies that you get acquainted with it.
"Okay". My response was a nod.
I refrained from further commenting on the subject since I couldn't determine whether what they said was true or an excuse. On foot, I had no trouble conducting patrols. Avoiding the frustration of being unable to shift was a huge relief. "Did you bring coffee?". Inquiring, he spoke out.
"I did".Upstodatee from Novel(D)ra/m/a.O(r)g
"Then I say we get some and get it hot.
"Do we just patrol the same path all night?".
"Pretty much".
It was simpler than I had anticipated. For some reason, Alanna keeps griping about it.
