Chapter 105 Instigation
“Not them. It was a gang of thugs who came to collect protection fees from us,” Julianna said angrily.
“They asked for half a million and tried to make me drink with them. Dad intervened, but they shoved
him. If it weren’t for the police, the consequences would have been a lot more serious. They also
threatened to come every day. We may not be able to run the company if they do.”
Christopher’s anger flared up at once. His previous expedition to Skywind Pavilion through the night
had led the government to take severe measures against grave illegal and criminal activities in
Jadeborough. It was to warn the underground forces in Jadeborough to be on their toes.
He did not expect there to be people bold enough to go against the directive.
I’d like to pay a visit to those men who dared to touch Julianna. They must be itching to be beaten up.
“I’m going out,” he growled.
His expression set with cold determination, Christopher turned toward the door.
Julianna became alarmed. As Christopher was a veteran, she understood that it was his nature to be
impulsive when facing confrontation. If something happened to Christopher when he locates the gang, I
wouldn’t be able to live with myself.
“Don’t, Christopher!” she called hurriedly. “Don’t bother yourself with those gangsters. We can’t afford
to mess with them. It’s no big deal; we’ll just move out and find someplace else.”
Cindy heard Christopher’s declaration. “Let him go,” she said at once. “He’s a retired soldier, isn’t he?
What kind of soldier is he if he can’t even take care of a few gangsters?”
“How can you say that, Mom? Christopher fought to protect his family and his country. Besides, there’s
no telling what those little gangsters are capable of. What if they—”
“If he is killed,” interrupted Cindy scornfully, “I will give him a state funeral. I think he wouldn’t dare.
Remember how he wanted to escape when the painting at Gold River Hotel was destroyed? Call
himself a soldier? Pah!” She was certain that Christopher would not carry out his threat. It would be
useless even if he did.
Julianna was angered by her mother’s words. Just as she was about to refute Cindy, Christopher
turned to her with a reassuring smile. “I’m just going to take a look. Don’t worry. Nothing will happen to
me.”
After a moment, Christopher turned around and walked out the door. The moment he turned his back to
Julianna, the murderous aura in his eyes blazed with ferocious intensity.
Cindy was planning to humiliate Christopher further, but she was frightened into silence by the sight of
Christopher’s expression. He looked as if he was ready to fight to the death.
“Christopher wouldn’t pick a fight with those gangsters, would he, Mom?” Julianna said worriedly.
“I don’t care how good he is,” Cindy said scornfully. “He will be overwhelmed by their numbers alone.
How is he not bothered about delivering himself to a fight where he’s grossly outnumbered? I think
Christopher’s just pretending. After walking around outside for a while, he will come back and tell us
that he can’t get them off our backs and advise us to move. I can’t imagine that soldiers these days not
only have no power, money, or education, they apparently have no sense of shame as well. What are
you keeping him for, Julianna?” Belonging © NôvelDram/a.Org.
Julianna leaped to her husband’s defense. “Christopher is not like that, Mom.”
“Hmph, I’m done trying to convince you.” Cindy returned to her room in a huff.
Christopher hailed a cab as soon as he stepped out to the street and had the driver make haste to the
office space rented by Frank.
The entire business district belonged to Christopher, who had Amanda recommend it to Frank through
an intermediary. Even the rental was to be settled at the end of each year.
Although the Murrays owned a piece of land, they were too poor to make much of it. Otherwise, they
would not have been forced into that state over the measly sum.
Christopher arrived at Julianna’s new company within ten minutes. Without hesitation, he first went to
the lockbox on the first floor and opened it. Lying within its confines was the key to the main entrance of
Julianna Corporation.
Amanda had prepared that in advance.
Christopher went up the stairs to the second floor to the entrance of Julianna Corporation. He then
produced the key and unlocked the door.
A thin young man with dark sunglasses appeared suddenly out of nowhere. “Hey, kid! Are you an
employee here?” he called with a sneer. “How dare you show up to work? Andreas has said that if the
money isn’t paid, no one is allowed to come to work!”
Christopher turned to glare at him. “Were you the ones who demanded the protection fee?”
“That’s right,” the man in sunglasses answered with a disdainful look. “You should be afraid!”
“Take me to see Andreas now, or you will regret it,” Christopher ordered bluntly.
“How dare you threaten me despite showing up here alone? Look at yourself! I’ll just slap you once and
—”
Before the gangster managed to complete his sentence, Christopher grabbed his neck and pushed him
against the wall.
