Chapter 850
The reporters, catching a whiff of a juicy story, surged forward once again.
Abraham, with a lazy lift of his gaze, gave Levi a subtle nod. Picking up on the signal, Levi motioned for the bodyguards to step aside, letting the reporters move
in.
They swarmed around Joy, firing off questions left and right. How did she get out so quickly? Was she pulling strings through her brother's influence? Joy's face paled a bit, giving her an air of vulnerability. But when the cameras rolled, she steeled herself.
She spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully, "The truth will come out. I've been falsely accused. I can't say more right now." Her words were veiled but hinted that the real culprit misusing power was Everett, the CEO of Bennett Corporation, not her brother.
Even as the reporters pushed for more, Joy managed a tired smile. "I'm really worn out today. Please, let me go home and rest. The investigation is ongoing, and there will be an announcement later. Thank you."
With that, Levi signaled again, and the bodyguards moved in to scatter the reporters, escorting Abraham and Joy to their car before they sped off.
...
For the next three days, Selena barely stirred from her bed, either sleeping or blankly staring at the ceiling. Her stillness was so profound that, save for the faint rise and fall of her chest, she could have been mistaken for lifeless.
Ava was beside herself with worry, finding it hard to focus on her chores. Mateo and Haley cried for their mom daily, but once by her side, they behaved with touching tenderness, quietly cuddling up to her.
Everett hardly slept, keeping vigil by Selena's side. Flynn tried every trick in the book, but nothing worked, admitting it was the toughest situation he'd ever faced.
Meanwhile, after Joy's release from detention, her assistant took the fall, confessing everything was her doing to curry favor with her bosses. The police quickly found transaction records and incriminating texts between her and the waiter, sealing the case with irrefutable evidence.
Abraham was pushing for a swift resolution, and upon hearing the news, Alexrushed to Moon Bay. Everett met him in the small upstairs lounge looking worn and gaunt from days without proper rest or food, his shirt hanging loosely on his frame.
Watching him, Alex felt a pang of sadness. The couple had been through so
much. Why did fate seem to have it in for them?
Everett rubbed his temples, his voice raspy, "What's up?"
Alex quickly snapped back to business, "Mr. Everett, it feels like we're hitting a wall. Should we step in?"noveldrama
With a high-profile official
overseeing the case, a confession, and undeniable evidence, the case would have been wrapped up if not for considering Everett's side.
ét
Everett pulled out a cigarette from his wrinkled pants, lighting it and taking a deep drag, the nicotine clouding around him as his gaze darkened.
Through the haze, his voice was steady, "No, let them wrap it up as is."
"Yes, I'll go stop... wait..."
Alex hesitated mid-sentence, wondering if she'd heard correctly. Her eyes widened slightly as she sought clarity.
"Mr. Everett, do you mean to stop them or... let it go?"
Could Joy really be let off the hook after causing so much trouble for Mrs. Everett?
What do you think?
