Chapter 3546 The Truth
Orla, who had maintained her composure until now, felt her expression shift.
When her brother, Olexar, had first disappeared, the entire Governor's Keep had searched for him in secret, but they found no trace. Both Orla and her late father had found the situation perplexing. Now, it all became clear-Brennan sabotaged their efforts from the shadows.
No wonder all our efforts had yielded nothing!
Orla's eyes glinted with cold fury as she fixed Brennan with an icy gaze.
"Governor, why are you looking at me like that?" Brennan shrugged innocently, his tone light. "I never wanted to harm your brother, but what can I say? The man just couldn't keep his nose out of other people's business."
Orla's hand lifted slightly, and the guards beside her instinctively moved their fingers toward their triggers.
Brennan laughed. "Oh, Governor-you're so adorably naive. Do you think I'd stand before you like this without making preparations?"
Clap, clap, clap!
Brennan clapped his hands, and dozens of soldiers clad in black armor
immediately appeared around the hall, their weapons aimed squarely at Orla and her guards.
The smirk on Brennan's face deepened with satisfaction.
These men had been stationed within the Governor's Keep long before that day, planted for this very moment.
Orla's gaze swept over the soldiers, her lips curling into a cold smile. "Well done, Brennan. You've truly been my right-hand man-placing so many spies right under my nose without me realizing it."
"No need to take it personally, Governor." With the situation firmly in his favor, Brennan was more than happy to gloat. "You've always been too confident-too sure that no one would dare infiltrate the Governor's Keep. And now, you face an open rebellion. Even Toliver, your ever-loyal steward, never suspected a thing. I've had my people here for years."
With that, Brennan sank leisurely into a chair, radiating the air of a victor.
Beside him, Paxton shifted impatiently, eager for Brennan to stop talking and take action. But Brennan merely raised a hand, signaling for patience.
"I have only one more question," Orla said, her voice unwavering. "Did you have anything to do with my father's death?"
Brennan's expression shifted to one of exaggerated innocence. "You wound me, Governor. Your father's death was the result of old war. injuries-nothing more. I even gave him some of my rare century-old medicinal herbs to try to help. But when Death comes knocking, there's no stopping him."
Orla held his gaze for a moment longer before nodding as though satisfied with the answer. Then, to the surprise of everyone in the room, a faint smile appeared on her lips.
"Tell me if the situation is so firmly in your hands, why do you think Toliver hasn't returned yet?"
Her words made both Brennan and Paxton stiffen as their eyes narrowed sharply. Right!
Toliver had vanished after leading them to the main hall. Where had he gone?
"Toliver should be reaching the
military camp now. It won't be long before 10,000 soldiers surround the Governor's Keep. Do you really think your 5,000 mercenaries can hold out fortong?"
"You dare threaten us?" Paxton shot to his feet, all pretense of civility gone. Hisnoveldrama
face twisted with rage as he glared down at Orla.
"I was willing to let this end peacefully out of respect for the bond between our fathers. But let me make myself clear-if you were the last man on Earth, I, Orla Lew, still wouldn't give you so much as a second glance. You're nothing but a greedy, selfish, arrogant, and hypocritical excuse for a man."
The blood drained from Paxton's face as fury overtook him. With a snarl, he pulled
a dagger from his coat. "Let's see if your body is as sharp as your tongue."
"B*stard!"
