Love’ss 42
Easton's grimace turned menacing when he registered Elena's clueless expression. "The lawyer should be on his way now."
The corner of Elena's mouth twitched at this. She was still skeptical despite everything Easton had told her. Even if those articles about her and Easton had angered Athena and Grace, she didn't think they wo After all, the two older women hated Madelyn with a passion.
"No, that's impossible," Elena said, shaking her head in disbelief. She hadn't come by the Miller residence in the last few days. Had something happened then?
She was still unconvinced as she went into the living room, only to see Madelyn and Athena engaged in what seemed like a pleasant
conversation.
Athena was even helping Madelyn with the clasp of the diamond necklace Madelyn had snatched back from Elena. "It looks very pretty on you, Maddie," Athena praised.
"Thank you, Grandma," Madelyn replied with a smile.
Pleased with her response, Athena nodded. The necklace had been gifted to Elena previously, but Athena thought it would look good with Madelyn's gown and gave it to her instead. To her relief, Madelyn didn't seem to mind at all.
"I'm glad you like it. I was worried you wouldn't," Athena said.
"Grandma, I will cherish any gift from you," Madelyn reassured.
Elena staggered back in surprise when she saw Madelyn appeasing Athena. Somehow, the foolish chit had managed to make amends with Andrew and win over Athena! It didn't make sense. How could Madelyn have charmed all these gul ble fools?
Elena couldn't believe the scene before her. She cut a vicious look at Madelyn, vowing to stop her from taking back what she had lost.
Determined to show Madelyn that she still had the Millers under her sway, Elena hid the wicked gleam in her eyes and greeted softly," Grandma Athena."
Her sweet voice interrupted the peace in the living room. It was only then that Madelyn, Athena, and Grace looked up at Elena. They each beheld her arrival with different expressions, and Elena was thrilled to see the hatred clouding Madelyn's gaze.
The Millers hated it when Madelyn threw a tantrum. They thought it was uncouth behavior.
However, Elena failed to notice that Grace's and Athena's gazes were far from friendly.
"Maddie, I didn't know you'd come to visit Grandma Athena. Why didn't you ask me to come along? Now I know why you weren't at Serenity Villa when I swung by earlier," Elena said.
Serenity Villa? Madelyn could have scoffed at Elena's gall to feign innocence after the fight they had. She had no interest in playing along with Elena's sisterly act and snapped, "Last I checked, you weren't allo Serenity Villa."
Blood drained from Elena's face. She was shocked that Madelyn would call her out in front of Grace and Athena. Didn't Madelyn care what the
older women would think of her if they found out about the fight at Serenity Villa?
Elena turned her pleading gaze on Athena, only to find Athena
glowering at her with unbridled hostility. Her mind turned blank as an intense roaring filled her head. She called out desperately, "Grandma Athena."
Athena huffed in dismay. "What are you doing here? Are you trying to shave more years off my life?"
"Grandma Athena, what are
you saying?" Panic filled Elena's voice. She had no idea why Athena was saying such things. A lot of things must have happened during her absence at the Miller residence the last few days. Athena's gaze was devoid of its usual warmth even as Elena put on an innocent, teary-
eyed front. Seething, she said, "We've already looked into Andrew's injury. You were the one behind it, yet you dared pin the blame on Maddie? I must've been blind to trust a wretched thing like you!" "What?" Elena's eyes widened as she looked at Madelyn. At once, the innocence and piteous gleam in her eyes vanished, replaced by cruelty and hatred.
