Love At Last

CAYDEN’S ‘ROOM MATE’

I tried to explain the compromising scene Lily beheld, but she wasn’t ready to listen to me as usual. Without letting me explain myself, she drew conclusions on her own and stormed off. I understood how she felt, and so didn’t bother calling her back as that would have been the wrong time to compel her to listen.

“Who was that?” Brielle asked me on shutting the door.

“A friend of mine,” I replied on turning around.

“I’m sure she came over to see you, then why did she run off like that without saying anything?”

“Look at us missy…,” I gestured, “who wouldn’t leave seeing us like this? I’m shirtless, my hair’s all messy and you’re supposedly wearing my shirt,” I explained. “She obviously got the wrong idea of the compromising situation we posed off.”

“OH!…”

“Which beings me to my question – why are you putting on my shirt miss?” I fired

“My bad, I discovered I came with no nighties. Fortunately, I saw this in the drawer and so I decided to help myself,” she explained. “I’m sorry,” she apologized.

I decided not to drag the situation any further and just replied: “It’s fine.”

“But why should my putting this on be a problem?”

“Don’t you see how alluring you look in that, showing too much skin? You’ve got guts you know?,” I teased, she chuckled. “You don’t know the kind of man I am, what if I decide to let nature take it’s course?”

“Nature’s beautiful and so is it’s course,” she said in a rather seductive manner. I chuckled and smiled while biting my lower lip. “As payment for the shirt, I’m making us breakfast this morning,” she chipped in.

“You cook?” she looked too posh to know how to do so.

“I also stay alone in New York, you know?” she retorted sarcastically; I completely understood she was imitating my reply when she asked if I cooked, yesterday. This girl was a whole new specie.

I watched as she walked to the kitchen; her butt line I could see from the shirt, all wiggly.

“What do we have here?” she rummaged my fridge for anything she could use to make breakfast.

“I’m quite out of stock, but we could make do with sandwiches.”

“Are you not going to put on a shirt?”

“Are you not going to take off my shirt?” I retorted and had her all smiley.

“I’m paying you for it already by offering to make breakfast.”

“And this is my house, I can do whatever I want, missy,” I didn’t back down.

She scoffed, “fine, partner,” she voiced

“I’ll leave this up to you. I need to finish up with my hair… or do you need me to show you around?”

“I’ll help myself. Go put on a shirt, you’re distracting me,” she said and turned back to the fridge to continue her search for ingredients.

I walked out the kitchen and headed inside to finish doing my hair.

Minutes later – after I and Brielle finished getting ready for the virtual meeting – we settled down to have breakfast. We had avocado toast for breakfast.

“I still had avocadoes?” I was amazed at the palatable dish she was able to put together.

“You don’t even know what you have in your own house,” she teased.

“You won’t blame me.”

“Be honest with me, you mostly eat out, right?”

“Where’s that coming from? Are you trying to imply I can’t cook?”

“I haven’t said anything yet.”

“Didn’t you enjoy the dinner I made us yesterday?” I asked again.

“I actually did enjoy it a lot,” she confessed.

“So why does it matter whether or not I eat out?”

“You’re drawing conclusions for yourself, Mr. ‘Partner'” she said the ‘partner’ with a pinch of ridicule in her tone. “I never said it mattered whether or not you ate out. I’m just curious.”

“Well, to be honest, I do eat out most times.”

“Figures.”

“But that’s actually because I feel lazy to cook most times, not because I don’t know how to cook,” I stressed the last part of my sentence. She chuckled. She was a pretty good conversationist, I must confess. With her, there were hardly any dull moments.

“What do you think today’s meeting is going to be about?” I changed the topic.

“Same old story,” she rolled her eyeballs dramatically. She was full of drama.

“What old story?” I was curious.

“He’d sound to us for the umpteenth time the description of our jobs.”

“You think that’s going to be it this time?”

“Fifty bucks,” she bet.

“Pretty confident of you,” I chuckled.

Around 11:15am, we were both seated in front of my laptop ready for the ‘zoom meeting’ with our boss.

‘Good morning sir,” we greeted unanimously and politely.

“Good morning,” he replied. Miss Brielle came over to your place?” He knew very well where I usually sat to have virtual meetings with him in my house. He was shocked to see Brielle beside me in the same location – my house.

“Yes sir,” I replied almost at once to prevent Brielle from spewing nonsense.

“Okay. The agenda for today’s meeting is to tell you the details of your job there,” he said and Brielle used her feet to kick me stylishly in a bid to remind me of what she said during breakfast. I chuckled silently.

“To be able to set up a new branch, we need affiliates. You have to visit small scale and large scale firms as the case may be to know how well we’d blend in…,”

Like Brielle had said, we were sounded for the ‘umpteenth’ time what we needed to do.

Finally, the meeting was over.

“Where did you spend the night, miss Brielle?” just when I was about to click the ‘leave meeting’ button, he asked.

“Here at Cayden’s,” she replied suddenly, driving me to utter shock.

“I’m Cayden’s roommate now,” like what she said earlier wasn’t enough, she added.Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.

“What are you doing?” I moved away from the camera and without voicing a word, I asked her.
