After her rebirth

Chapter 306 Waiting for a Miracle

"What are you staring at?" Maximilian asked, wrapping his arm around Katniss.

Katniss shook her head. "Nothing, let's head back."

Maximilian had been itching to leave for a while, so he naturally held Katniss close and they walked off together.

From a distance, someone watched them and sighed, "The Hamilton guy and his wife are really inseparable."

Another person chimed in, sounding equally envious.

On the way, Katniss mentioned to Maximilian that she planned to visit Elodie the next day. Maximilian simply asked, "Want me to come with you?"

"No," Katniss shook her head. "Conrad will be with me."

She was going to the hospital, and she knew she would inevitably run into the Manners family. The Manners family had too many issues, and she didn't want Maximilian to get involved.

Maximilian was already swamped with work; she didn't want him wasting energy on people who weren't worth it.

The next morning, Katniss arrived at the hospital early.

She found Elodie's room, but only saw a caregiver who was munching on sunflower seeds and playing on her phone.

Hearing someone enter, the caregiver quickly hid the seeds and looked at Katniss, puzzled. "Did you come to the wrong room?"

Katniss glanced at the caregiver. "No, I'm in the right place."

The caregiver didn't say anything else, awkwardly cleaning up the scattered seed shells while sneaking glances Katniss. Finally, she asked, "Are you here to see the patient? I haven't seen you before."

Katniss replied, "Yeah, it's my first time here. I'll just take a quick look."

With that, Katniss began checking on Elodie. Elodie looked like she was just sleeping, with an IV drip attached. Upon closer inspection, Katniss noticed the IV bag was empty, and blood had started to back up into the tube.

She immediately pressed the call button by the bed.

The caregiver, seeing her press the button, exclaimed, "What are you doing?"

Katniss gave her a cool look and ignored her, focusing on Elodie's IV.

Seeing the blood in the tube, the caregiver finally panicked. "How did it finish so quickly? I was watching it the whole time."

Katniss adjusted the IV tube, allowing the blood to flow back into Elodie's body. Once it was done, she removed the needle.

The caregiver stood there awkwardly, unsure of Katniss's identity, and could only offer a forced smile.

Katniss didn't expect to get any useful information from this inattentive caregiver. She carefully examined Elodie herself.

Elodie was indeed in a vegetative state, but she looked like she was just sleeping. After a while, Katniss confirmed that Elodie's condition was unusual.

If she were to treat her, it would be very challenging.

What Katniss didn't know was that the doctors had already given Elodie a slim chance of waking up.

At the door, a nurse arrived in response to the call button. "Is the IV almost done?" Katniss looked up and said calmly, "It's done. I already removed the needle. Is there anything else to administer?"

"Why did you remove the needle yourself? After removing it, you need to..."

"The blood was backing up," Katniss interrupted, then walked out to find Dylan.

She couldn't understand why the Manners family couldn't even hire a competent caregiver.

Dylan was surprised to see Katniss. "You're here to see Mom?"

He hadn't expected Katniss to come so early. He thought she would delay or avoid it altogether.

"I've already seen her. I suggest you get a new caregiver."

With that, Katniss turned to leave.

Dylan called after her, catching up. "You're just going to leave like that?"

Katniss replied, "What else would I do?"

She hadn't agreed to help Oliver treat Elodie. Besides, she wasn't a miracle worker. Even

if her grandmother were here, she might not be able to treat Elodie.

Elodie needed a miracle, not treatment.

With that, Katniss had no intention of staying and started to leave.

Dylan reached out to stop her, but Conrad blocked him, giving Dylan a warning look.

Dylan could only walk alongside Katniss, confused. "Are you really just going to leave? You came all this way just to criticize the caregiver?"

Oliver had told him to prepare to persuade Katniss, but he hadn't expected her to be so indifferent.

"It's not about criticizing. It's a friendly reminder. I came to see her, just to see her. I already told Oliver before," Katniss explained patiently.

Conrad stayed alert, ready to protect Katniss from Dylan.

Dylan compromised, somewhat resigned, "Do we have to talk like this? Besides, hownoveldrama

do I know if you've visited Mom? Why don't you go with me now?"

Katniss chuckled, paused, and said, "I saw the caregiver you hired munching on sunflower seeds and playing on the phone. How could I not have visited? You're trying to guilt-trip me here. Why not put some effort into finding a more diligent caregiver and patiently wait for a miracle to happen?"

"What do you mean? You're saying so much, just unwilling to accompany me to see Mom again? And cursing that Mom needs a miracle to wake up?"

Dylan's face darkened, looking at Katniss with annoyance.

"I'm not cursing her, I'm just stating the facts," Katniss was not polite. Even if Dylan was getting emotional, her expression remained unchanged.

Dylan, feeling helpless, softened his tone. "Can you at least come back and tell me what you think is wrong?"

"If you ask nicely, I might consider it," Katniss said, crossing her arms and smiling at Dylan's frustrated expression.

Seeing someone she disliked in a tough spot did bring her some satisfaction.

Her trip to the hospital wasn't entirely wasted.

Thinking about how Oliver was still under police suspicion and the doctors' grim prognosis for Elodie, Dylan added, "Please, I'm asking you."

Katniss felt pleased and told Conrad, "Let's go back and take another look."

Conrad immediately followed Katniss, while Dylan gritted his teeth, his face dark with frustration.

Back in Elodie's room, they found Clara talking to the caregiver. The two seemed quite friendly.

Seeing Katniss, Clara frowned. "What are you doing here? Don't come here to upset my mom. She doesn't like you!"
