Branch Seventy Four
As the Limo came to a half and the chauffeur opened the door Jessica climbed out immediately. She has been in complete silence it was uncomfortable.
Was he the same one who comforted less than forty eight hours ago? Was it just pity from his end? She hated herself for thinking of giving him a chance. She thought that maybe if she became close to him they could keep in touch after the divorce.
Now she had to go on a trip she did not know how long with him. How was she going to survive being with him?
“Jessica wait” She heard him call her. She wanted to turn back immediately.
‘But what if it’s my subconscious mind that is playing tricks on me’ she thought. She did not hesitate to keep walking ahead. Taking gentle and calculated steps because of the heels she wore.
She felt his hand on her shoulders and although there was a thin net separating her shoulder blades from his hands she felt a jolt of cold current pass through her shoulders all over her body.
“Wait” he whispered close to her ears. She moved forward a bit to shake his hands off her. Why did he touch her? Why was he causing her confusion? Wasn’t it obvious she was trying to avoid him?
She turned to face him and he stared deeply at her that she felt he was reading her soul.
“Yes,” she said trying to voice irritation that was nonexistent. She wanted to be super mad at him but it was as if she was just barking up a tree. It felt like he had not done anything wrong that deserved such treatment from her. When in fact he had done worse more to her.
“Since we came together. It would be strange if we go in separately” he told her.
He knew he had offended but he wanted to make sure she wasn’t disrespected at the party. He knew the people of Chiachester and even more especially the upper class since they were all he ever had to deal with.
They were a bunch of low self esteemed people who would jump at any chance to put one and another down with their words.
Since she still had ten and a half months roughly to go her impression would do so great that or good to his reputation and that of the Delgado name in general.
“Here,” he said putting his hand into an arc and asking her to link arms.
“I should link arms with you?” she asked with shock.
She could not believe he did not apologize but this was the most of his concern.
“People are watching, smile” he whispered. She caught a whiff of his cologne as he leaned. She loves the smell and she hated herself. His cologne was her new favorite thing to smell she could not deny it.
“People are watching?” was that the most of his worries?
She knew that appearing to be a perfect wife in the eye of the public was a part of her job description.
Why was she mad that he did not acknowledge her as she might want? It was not a part of the description.
“Suck it up” she whispered to herself as she walked to stand beside him and link hands with him.Published by Nôv'elD/rama.Org.
“Let’s go”
Jessica found herself enjoying the company of Xavier.
“We have to go around like this for a moment to greet the majority of the people here,” Xavier said in a whisper.
“Do I have to?” she asked.
As much as she was enjoying the company she was reminded of the tale of the toad in a pot of water that was set to boil. The frog did not know he was being boiled to death but enjoyed the warmth and subtle changes in the water temperature.
“This is your first official event since we got married. It’s the least you could do” Xavier said.
“It’s the least I could do. It’s a contract. It’s just a contract” she whispered as they went.
Xavier heard her but what could he say? Assure her that it was more than a contract at this point. Or should he tell her that the money she would get in the end was more than she needed to do?
They entered inside and the first person they met was Marcus. Xavier had noticed the not-so-subtle glances he threw her way when they signed the contract. It was obvious he was interested in her.
Xavier knew that Marcus was engaged to be married later that year.
“Me and Mrs Delgado,” Marcus said stretching his hand for a handshake. He shook Xavier’s hand and then went in for a shake with Jessica too.
He wanted to hug her if he could. She looked exceptional that night. He took her to his lips and planted a small and polite kiss on it. Jessica could not be offended because it was sweet.
“You look so beautiful tonight,” he said complimenting her. He meant what he said and he could stand by his word. Jessica found his earlier gesture a little likable since it was followed by such a comment. Something too hard for her husband to say.
‘Did I just see him as my husband?’ she thought to herself. She shook off the feeling and paid Marcus a compliment too. Not because she wanted to return the favor but because he was looking not too bad himself. The tuxedo did him well too
Xavier did not like the interaction but he could not say anything. He was beaming mad.
“Marcus” a high pitched voice called and his face turned sour. He quickly adjusted it because he was about to introduce her as his wife to be. He had no choice.
As much as he wanted Jessica to be the one standing by his side he had no courage to break it off with Gold and Jessica was still with Xavier in the meantime. He had ten months to meticulously plan out his strategy.
Gold came and latched herself to Marcus her dripping from his shoulders. For some reason, Jessica felt that the amount of skinship she was getting with Xavier was not enough. She felt jealous of the girl standing there that she could be free with her partner as she wanted to be.
“This is Gold, my fiancee,” Marcus said introducing them.
“Nice to meet you,” Gold said with a broad smile.
“And I know you know Mr. Delgado, this is his wife, Jessica,” Marcus said pointing to Jessica while speaking to Gold.
“Why do you call my wife by her first name?”
