Chapter 678
Silas wore a look of solemn seriousness.
Quentin and the others seemed fairly satisfied with him so far.
Of course, just being decent wasn't enough for them to give their full approval. There were still some hoops Silas had to jump through, whether he liked it or not.
"Callie, it's getting late. Why don't you head upstairs and get some rest?" Quentin said, looking up at Calliope with a kind of grave earnestness. "The guys and I need to have a little chat with Mr. Myers."
"Quentin, are you sure it's just a 'chat'?" Calliope asked, a hint of suspicion in her voice. She knew her brothers. They were probably planning something a little more intense than just friendly conversation.
She'd mentally prepared for her brothers to give Silas the third degree, but she still hoped they wouldn't be too harsh. After all, she genuinely liked Silas. What if her brothers really went after him and scared him off? Or, on the flip side, what if Silas lost his cool and things got ugly? She didn't want either scenario.
"Relax, it's just a talk," Norton said with a reassuring smile.
Julius nodded in agreement. "Callie, this is just guy stuff. Go on, get some sleep."noveldrama
Calliope hesitated, clearly unconvinced. She didn't trust her brothers not to start something, and she didn't trust Silas not to finish it. Either way, she'd be upset if things took a bad turn.
Quentin seemed to sense her unease. "Callie, I promise, no one's getting hurt. We know how you feel. We're just going to talk."
Silas chimed in, flashing her a gentle smile. “I won't let anything happen to your brothers, either. Go get some rest, Callie. Everything's fine."
With both sides reassuring her, Calliope finally relented and went upstairs to her room. She wasn't entirely convinced, but if they said it'd be okay, she decided to trust them, for now.
As soon as Calliope was out of earshot, the guys motioned for Silas to join them in the living room. He took a seat, facing all three brothers, each of them suddenly looking far more intimidating than before.
Not that Silas was easily cowed. He carried himself with a quiet confidence that matched theirs, and his respect for them was clear.
Quentin, as the eldest, spoke first. "Mr. Myers, why don't you start by telling us a little about yourself?"
He didn't leave it at that, though. "And while you're at it, tell us why you want to marry Callie. Why her? Do you really love her? There are some rumors about you we'd like cleared up, too."
"We want you to be straight with us," Quentin continued, his gaze unwavering. "We've heard a lot of things about you, and we're curious. Why did you pick Callie? How far would you go for her?"
Norton and Julius both nodded their agreement, eager for answers. After all, there were whispers that Silas had feelings for someone else, that he was only with Callie because she reminded him of another woman from his past.
Silas met their eyes, his voice calm and steady. "I'm sure you've already heard plenty about me, my finances, my background. None of that's hard to dig up."
"If you want to know something personal, maybe I should start with my family. My mother passed away a while ago. My father, Oliver, lives overseas. He's... complicated. Honestly, he's been a problem for me, and if he ever shows up here, he could be a problem for Callie, too."
"But I'll protect her," Silas said firmly. "I won't let anything happen to Callie. Not
from him, not from anyone."
He paused, his expression softening. "Because I love her. I really do."
