Chapter 54 Your Man Is Still Alive
Only after steadying her nerves did Diane see clearly that it was actually Christopher. He was still
dressed in the attire he wore at the banquet, but his suit jacket had been taken off. He sat there only in
his white shirt while looking lonely and slightly cold from behind, and he seemed like an ice block that
radiated chilliness in all directions.
Obviously, he was sitting there and waiting for her. Since the house wasn’t big, she had no place to
hide, so she could only brace herself and walk up to him.
“Why are you back? Are you here to grab something?”
Diane couldn’t think of another reason why Christopher had come back. Is he so obedient to Queenie
to the extent that he came home since she asked him to? As the thought crossed her mind, she felt
unhappy again. Without saying another word, she stood frozen at a short distance away from him.
Christopher turned to look at her and asserted his ownership of this house. “If I’m not mistaken, this
seems to be my house.”
“I know that.” Diane stood there without moving, her back straight as her eyes shone with undisguised
fiery rage. “I know that this is your house, Mr. Wayne—I even expressed my willingness to leave this
house and stop bothering you. So, are you coming back today to sign the divorce papers with me? If
that’s the case, I’ll praise the Lord. I can finally pack up my stuff and get out of here right away.”
Her blunt and smoothly-spoken remark caused a tremor in the depths of Christopher’s eyes. He had no
idea since when the woman, who previously wanted to duck her head and hide at the sight of him, had
become so fluent and articulate. After looking at this woman for a while, he stood up.
Diane’s heartbeat suddenly quickened as the white silhouette approached her. She was afraid, but
Christopher didn’t notice it as the panic on her face was concealed in the dim light. All he saw was the
tiny figure who stood stubbornly in front of him without backing away at all.
“What if I never sign the papers?” As he walked up to the tiny figure, he lowered his head and blocked
the light above Diane’s head with his tall stature, enveloping her whole body in his scent.
Diane’s heart jumped. She looked up at Christopher’s face, and the distance between them was so
close that she could see his dashing eyebrows and starry eyes so clearly; she could even see the
reflection of her panic-stricken face in his eyes. While she tried hard to maintain her composure, she
met his gaze and asked, “Aren’t you afraid of doing Miss Hayworth a disservice by doing so, Mr.
Wayne?”
“So what if I’ve done her a disservice, and so what if I haven’t?” Christopher muttered casually as his
thin lips parted slightly.
Such a dismissive response made Diane want to beat Christopher up. What should she say in
response to such a smooth tongue of his? After a long silence and some hesitation, she finally replied,
“We are adults, Mr. Wayne—let’s stop pulling such a childish trick. We got married back then to get
what we each needed, and you never once forgot to remind me to take the pills afterward; this just
proves that you never took our marriage seriously. Since that is the case, why don’t you let me off now
that you have Miss Hayworth? I think this would be good for the both of us. As for the help you’ve
offered me previously, please know that I’m grateful for that. My family and younger sister once spent
some of the money on your card, but I’ll return the money using my salary. Please be rest assured, Mr.
Wayne, for I’ll try my best not to owe you a single cent.”
Since Christopher was much taller than her, she could only look up slightly while speaking even when
he lowered his head. She seemed so weak and harmless before him, but her words were so
determined and harsh.
What gives her the right to be so fearless in front of me? As anger surged up within him, Christopher
suddenly took a step forward, stretched out his arm, and put it around Diane’s slim waist. “Do you think
you only owe me the tens of thousands?” His glum-looking face hovered so closely above her face that
the tip of his nose touched hers, sending a slight chill to the depths of her heart. He then continued,
“You owe me too much, Diane.”
His angry words puzzled Diane. “What do I owe you? You’re the one who entered the wrong hotel room
in the first place. I really don’t understand what on earth I owe you, Christopher,” she replied as a
feeling of grievance rose within her. As Christopher’s body leaned closely over her, she tried her best to
lean over backward and turn her face away while saying these words. After that, she turned her face
around and stared at him, and her eyes misted over with tears. “You said that you needed a wife, and I
happened to need a husband who’s a man of position. Fine, we got married and took what we each
needed, and I don’t think I have taken much advantage of you. What about now, though? You made me
a laughing stock in the eyes of everyone by openly showing up on public occasions with another
woman. Even if our marriage is nothing more than a contract, I’m afraid that it’s rather immoral of you
to carry it out in such a way, Mr. Wayne.”
Diane was actually bad at concealing her emotions. She felt a slight twinge in her nose as she spoke,
for she recalled the scene at the cocktail party earlier that day. Instead of being so furious that she
wanted to fight the man before her to the death, she had no idea why she felt so aggrieved that she
wanted to cry. Consequently, her eyes misted over with a layer of tears, and it was so visible that the
hearts of those looking at her would stop beating at the sight of it. Exclusive content © by Nô(v)el/Dr/ama.Org.
As he stared at the flicker in her eyes, Christopher asked, “Do you mind it a lot?”
Diane was startled by this and she panicked deep down inside. She tried to hold back her tears,
preventing them from running down her cheeks and embarrassing her. “You’re overthinking things, Mr.
Wayne. I’m just reminding you that since we signed the contract, you should honor it by showing some
respect at the very least. If you don’t want to show it some respect, you should let go of me so that both
of us are relieved.”
While she tried to escape from Christopher’s increasingly forceful hold, Diane struggled for a moment.
Unfortunately, he was very stubborn; she couldn’t escape from him since he continued to trap her in his
arms. “Whether I should let you go or not isn’t up to you. Are you suffering from Alzheimer’s, Diane?
Have you forgotten what I said?” Christopher recalled sneeringly. His breath caressed her face lightly,
making her shudder all over.
What did he say? Diane’s mind was so confused that it took her a long time to recall what he had said.
Now that the game has begun, the decision is in his hands. Why is that so? Diane was angry and
unwilling to resign herself to this fate, but she couldn’t do anything because her opponent was
Christopher. He could play tricks to his advantage, but she couldn’t.
At the thought of this, Diane was suddenly discouraged; her strong will and persistence just now had
become so laughable. What on earth could she capitalize on to be so stubborn against him? “I haven’t
forgotten about your words, Mr. Wayne. All right then, just do whatever you wish. Can’t you let go of me
first, though? I’m tired, and I want to sleep. Would you at least allow that, Mr. Wayne?” She
surrendered first. Since Diane didn’t want to fight anymore, she decided to give up.
This sudden change of attitude manifested itself on Diane’s face as a look of disinterest. She’s so
eager to run away from me that she’s unwilling to speak anymore. She vibrated with laughter and
couldn’t stop talking to that guy, yet she dislikes speaking a word more than necessary to me?
Christopher’s eyes turned chilly as he fiercely tightened his arm around Diane’s waist. “What can you
do if I don’t allow it? I’m warning you, Diane—your man is still alive, so don’t be in such a rush to have
an affair.”
