Chapter 105
Chapter 105
“No need. Just bring me the first aid kit.”
He sat on the couch with a poker face, cool as a cucumber while tending to his own wound. Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
It was dead silent around; nobody dared to disturb him.
White gauze wrapped around his hand, Elgin casually tied a knot and suddenly asked, “How’s the situation with the prison?”
The butler didn’t catch on at first, “Prison? Oh… Mr. Ramirez, are you talking about Dr. Sanders?”
“Who else would I be referring to?”
Dr Sanders has been locked up, haven’t heard any fuss about him.”
Elgin’s lips curled into a chilly smirk, “Tomorrow moming, bring him here.”
The butler’s heart skipped a beat, but he could only reply, “Yes, Mr. Ramirez.”
Getting up, Elgin kicked the first aid kit away and headed upstairs, agitated.
Letitia… this is all your doing!
The butler froze for two seconds, then snapped out of it and hurried off to take care of business.
The next day.
Letitia freshened up, had a quick breakfast, and was ready to head to work.
Just a few steps out, she spotted a figure standing at the villa’s entrance from afar. He looked familiar.
On a closer look, her expression changed completely, and her bag dropped to the ground.
Letitia rushed forward in a panic, “Dad!”
Hearing her voice, Preston also turned around, “Letitial”
They embraced each other.
Whenever Letitia visited her father in jail, they were separated by thick glass she could see him but couldn’t touch him. She never thought there would come a day when they could meet like this, breathing the air of freedom!
“Dad, how come you’re here?” Letitia was both shocked and overjoyed. “Were you released as innocent?”
“I don’t know, someone picked me up early this morning and then brought me here.”
Years of prison life had stripped Preston of his former dignity. His hair turned gray, his back somewhat stooped, his hands were rough and covered with tiny cuts, some still bleeding.
Letitia’s heart ached, “Dad, your hands… they used to be so well-cared for, they’re meant for surgery…”
“Ah. it doesn’t matter, I’m… not going to be operating anymore.”
“Dad, there will be a chance, there will be.”
Preston gave a sad smile and changed the subject, “Letitia, where is this place?”
“This is… Ivory Towers, Elgin’s residence.”
“Why did he bring me here?”
Letitia’s heart skipped a beat too. Yeah… what’s Elgin’s next move?
“For a family reunion,” Elgin approached leisurely with his hands behind his back, a good chance for a heart-to-heart chat.”
Letitia immediately shielded her father behind her.
What are you afraid of?” he raised an eyebrow, “So you do get scared after all?”
Letitia was on guard, “You can’t possibly be this kind-hearted.”
“Don’t paint me as the bad guy. After all… he’s my father-in-law, I’ve got to treat him well.”
A sly grin played on Elgin’s lips, but his eyes were ice cold. He was intimidating.
Father-in-law? Preston’s face went pale, “Letitia, you… you married him? How could you marry him!”
Many woren dream of being Mrs. Ramirez, and she got it without breaking a sweat, replied Elgin
Preston shook his head. ‘No, it’s not like that… Letitia, what exactly happened?”
Dad. Be a long story, I’m fine?
Letitia forced a smile, trying to look like she was doing well,
But she forgot that the people who loved her the most in the world were her parents.
Her strength, her facade, seen right through in an instant.
Preston sighed deeply, “Marrying into the Ramirez family isn’t a blessing. it’s atonement, repentance.”
He hit the nail on the head.
‘Dad, it’s really not as bad as you think Letitia continued to put on a brave face, “I’m now a jewelry designer at the Ramirez Group, my
salary can cover mom’s medical expenses.. when there’s a chance, I’ll arrange for you to see mom.”
Preston shakily raised his hand, gently stroking her hair, “I’m the one who dragged you down.”
She shook her head vehemently, “Dad, you brought me to the world.”
Finishing her words, she walked swiftly to Elgin, her voice soft, “You can ask me to do anything, just let my dad go now.”
“You’ve come around?”
“Yes”
“And you won’t go against me anymore?”
“No, I won’t.” Letitia looked submissive, her eyes downcast
Elgin’s fingertips caressed her cheek, “If only you were this obedient from the start.”
“I was wrong.
All her vulnerabilities and leverage were in Elgin’s hands; she had no room to be capricious.
With just a pinch, she’d fall in line, powerless to resist
Letitia knew there was more to her dad’s visit to Ivory Towers than just a reunion.
Elgin’s next move. she could guess some of it.
She could bear it, but she didn’t want her father to worry about her anymore.
“So, Elgin leaned in, his breath warm on her forehead, “will you go apologize to Shela?”
“Yes, I will.”
A pleased smile formed on Elgin’s lips, “Good girl.”
Letitia clenched her palm, took a deep breath, then turned to Preston with a smile, “Dad, you should go back, I’ll visit you when I get the chance.”
“Letitia..”
“Mr. Ramirez was just being thoughtful, he knew I missed you, so he pulled some strings to get you out for a bit.”
Preston looked at her in silence.
Just now, he had seen Elgin whispering something to Letitia. Although he couldn’t hear it, from the satisfaction in Elgin’s eyes, he could guess that they had struck some sort of deal.
The Ramirez family hated him for causing Marcel’s death, how could they possibly treat his daughter well?
“Letitia, come here. Suddenly, Preston showed a kind smile and beckoned her over
She approached, “Dad.”
Preston wrapped her in his arms, “It’s on me, girl. I let you down, I made you bear all this… It’s all too late now, no turning back, no do-overs. Letitia, all I want, deep down, is for you to live a happy life, even if it’s just a normal life, even if it’s plain Jane.”
Letitia felt a wave of panic. Why was her dad suddenly saying stuff like this?
It felt like a goodbye.
These messes, they started with me, and I’ll be the one to put an end to them. Always remember, Letitia, you’re my pride and joy, my little girl, and I’m proud of you.”
Preston ruffled her hair.
“Dad you.” Letitia reached out to hold onto him, but she only managed to grab the tail end of his shirt.
The next second, Preston tumed and bolfed, sprinting straight toward a pillar. He’s trying to off himself!
‘Ceditio’s voice, sharp and hoarse, pierced the sky.
Her eyes went wade involuntanly, her heart seemed to stop in that instant.
She wanted to grab her dad, but she couldn’t catch up; he was too far gone.
Just as Preston was about to hit the pillar, the butler burst from the side, threw himself in front of Preston, and took the hit, becoming a human cushion for Preston.
